Latest from Doom & BloomProgram Spotlight In episode two of Doom and Bloom, Marc O’Brien and Brian Stancheski explore why sustainability isn’t at the core of every project—and how to change that. Using the two-word mash up "jolly & sand", they brainstorm ideas around viral campaigns to sustainability beach festivals. They also discuss bold ways to make climate solutions exciting and impossible to ignore. It’s time to rethink sustainability as something desirable, unforgettable, and built into everything we do.
Eric Benson is the host of Climify and leads Climate Designers educator focused initiatives. One of his long standing projects outside of Climate Designers is Re-nourish, which provides strategies, tools, and resources to design with nature as a stakeholder framed through Life-Centered Systems Thinking (LCST). Together with co-founder Yvette Perullo, they have recently redesigned and updated all of the site's content. Some of the new strategies, tools, and resources include:

We had a cross-continental first last year when Margaret To of the LA Chapter collaborated with Toshi Otsuka of the Japan Hub for an event in Tokyo to screen her From Soil to Soul documentary. Check out Margaret’s LinkedIn Post with photos some reflections about the event. It was amazing getting to share our pilot episode in Tokyo! After the screening, we had a heartwarming conversation with local community members and designers. It turns out some of the food injustices we face in Los Angeles are resonating in Tokyo as well. - Margaret T. More people showed up at the end of the year than we expected. During the event, From Soil to Soul became a powerful medium that encouraged people to think deeply and feel connected to the issue. We had many great discussions and conversations, and we were inspired by Margaret’s actions. - Toshi O. Volunteer Openings at Climate DesignersCheck out our latest volunteer roles. 📺 San Francisco design studio gets Grammy nomination for sustainable album artwork
Jonny is a friend of the Climate Designers community and runs a design studio with a focus on sustainable graphic design. His studio, TOOOT, got nominated for a Grammy! Check out the beautiful artwork that was nominated in the clip, and more of their work here. - Natalie W.
📚 In a crisis of democracy what role can graphic designers play? Everyday Practice imparts its insights
Climate solutions depend on democracy, but disinformation, corporate influence, and voter suppression stand in the way. Designers shape narratives, and design is political in an era of misinformation. We must expose power, mobilize action, and disrupt the status quo. Screw aesthetic neutrality. Design like the planet depends on it, because it does. - Holden H.
♻️ Nowhere Collective: Reimagining Waste with Creativity
I recently had an inspiring conversation with Katy, the founder of Nowhere Collective, and I love what they’re building. Their Nowhere Marketplace features upcycling makers who transform locally sourced reclaimed materials into beautifully crafted goods. I’m keeping this on my radar for sustainable gift shopping, and if you know designers or makers working with offcast materials, definitely send them Katy’s way! This community is all about collaboration and finding new purpose for what others might discard. Check them out and get inspired. - Linsey N.
📚 Coffeeshop menu with carbon footprint
Would you rethink your coffee order if you saw the carbon footprint first? Leila Toplic did (and I appreciated her post about it on LinkedIn.) Leila shared a picture of the menu and wrote: ""A dairy latte? 350g of CO2. Switch to plant-based milk? 140g. I chose tea at 48g of CO2."" Her post made me think: Where else might we offer more visibility into the climate impact of our day-to-day choices? - Leslie F.

Hey Climate Designers, Hope everyone had a good summer ☀️. We’re getting back into the swing of things, and before getting into this month’s feature on solarpunk we have some exciting announcements. First, our online meetups are back! We have one for Design Educators coming up this week on August 28th, and one for our Global Community on October 1st. More details below. Happy Summer! We're skipping next month’s newsletter as things slow down for the season. You’ll hear from us again at the end of August with some exciting new offerings - we’re relaunching our online events come fall! Since the beginning, our virtual events have been an important part of the organization as a way to build our global community. Over the years, we produced many one-off events, experimenting with a variety of formats. One of those experiments was a two-week summit back in 2021....
Thoughts on Climate Resilience This month we’re trying something a little different with a themed newsletter. Given recent natural disasters in the US and around the world, the topic of climate resiliency has been on our minds. Climate resilience allows us to prepare, plan, absorb, recover, and more successfully adapt to disruptions due to human-caused climate breakdown. The impacts will show up differently in every neighborhood, which means each of us needs to understand specific risks and...
