Climate Designers Monthly: Reflecting on 2025

Hey Climate Designers,

As we close out 2025, this message is a short one. This year has hit every region of the world differently, but for many it has been a time of upheaval and change.

Traditionally winter was a time of quiet, recuperation, and preparation for the year ahead. These natural cycles are difficult to honor in our current paradigm, but there is much value in creating the spaciousness needed to reflect and make thoughtful intentions for the year to come. Or to simply do nothing.

One of the most radical acts we can do in a culture of hyper-productivity is rest. We know this may not be possible for all, but wishing everyone some moments of calm amongst what is often a busy holiday season.

Until next year,
Marc & Natalie, co-founders

Help us keep this party going!

This is the final call for our fundraiser. We made it more than halfway, but are still short of our goal to cover expenses for next year. Can you help us make it to 100%?

Recurring donations especially sustain us long term, and minimize our need to continue sending emails like these. If a few percent of those reading this email pledged $1/month, we’d be funded many times over. Consider giving the gift of a few dollars each month to allow this organization to continue operation.

As our thanks, one-time donors of $50+ and monthly donors of $5+ will receive a copy of the Field Guide to Climate Design ebook (more on it below), access to members-only content, and our deepest gratitude.

Community Highlights

Team reflections on the year

“The biggest highlight for the Boston Chapter was the Prototype for the Planet Design-athon event we held in the middle of April. We had 12 teams of 4 designers & creatives in-person and remote with workshops, mentors, and judges. We roughly had about 100 people helping us all for this goal for designing for the climate. It's the proudest moment of our chapter.”

- Brett Duboff, Boston Chapter Lead

“The Bay Area had some fun events this year, and a highlight for me was our Solarpunk Salon event which celebrated one of the things I love most, climate fiction and its ability to help us imagine alternative futures. It was an opportunity to share the concept of solarpunk and steward some future visioning conversations, the results of which we consolidated here and cover some interesting ground.”

- Natalie Walsh, Co-founder and Bay Area Chapter Lead

“The thread through every gathering was being mindful of curating experiences that felt welcoming, accessible, authentic, and creative! A highlight was bringing together a variety of speakers and partners for our LA Climate Week hub, screening From Soil to Soul, and facilitating 'Reimagine Your Neighborhood' workshops. Collaborating to create space for everyone to use their imagination and dream up the climate future they want to see!”

- Rachel Cellinese and Margaret To, Los Angeles Chapter Leads

“So many highlights from the year! We got fiscally sponsored, created the necessary backend infrastructure to support our 50+ volunteer team, relaunched virtual events (more coming soon!), and launched our first donation drive. All of this is gearing us up for a bigger and better 2026. Stay tuned!”

- Marc O’Brien, Co-founder

“My highlight this year was our Climate Resilience Walking Tour. It all started when our happy hour happened to be next to a gathering of Climatebase Fellows. That conversation evolved into an augmented reality walking tour where we visualized future flooding scenarios and learned about port resilience infrastructure. With five organizations co-hosting, we brought together a varied group of people, and everyone got to see San Francisco from a new perspective.”

- Leslie Forman, Bay Area Chapter Lead

“Climate Designers Japan began hosting regular online events with TechIE this year, sparking active discussions on how designers can address climate change and energizing the Japanese designers’ Discord community. Next year, we plan to run workshops with Thinknado at Spectrum Tokyo Festival 2026 in Japan.”

- Toshi Otsuka, Japan Hub Lead

“The highlight for Climate Designers Singapore this year was hosting 'The Regenerative Strategy Lab - Redesigning Leadership for a Living World' at Bangkok Climate Action Week.
We explored what Regenerative leadership looks like in practice. The feedback was amazing and showed that this topic resonated deeply with participants. We're planning to bring it to other events in 2026! And my personal highlight this year was definitely the launch of my book “I
magine - Embracing Chaos and Possibility in a Planetary Emergency” at the ArtScience Museum in Singapore."

- Natalie Seisser, Singapore Chapter Lead

“It’s a bit hard to nail down just one highlight, but I’ll share some of my favorites. The creation and kick-off of the Climate Designers Chicago Chapter, restarting of online events (with a ton of ideas still to be created), and helping create marketing materials for the fantastic work that everyone at Climate Designers does. All of these were a reminder, that I didn’t realize I needed, to remember that there are people everywhere working towards one goal: Tackling Climate Change. Most of the time, it feels like a big group project that we are “failing”. We aren’t failing, it’s just hard to see how many people are working towards it from our siloed perspective at times. I look forward to 2026 and seeing so many more folks be curious and join in on the work that genuinely benefits us all."

- Sabrina Karas, Chicago Chapter Lead & Community Manager

Hey Climate Designers, Before getting into this month's issue, this is your friendly reminder that we are 100% volunteer-led and operate on a shoestring. Hey Climate Designers, Imagine a world where every designer working on climate has access to the collective wisdom of everyone who came before them. The designer trying to justify higher upfront costs for regenerative materials? Someone else just perfected that pitch. The freelancer wondering how to price for sustainable options? There's a designer who figured out that model. The studio leader trying to shift company culture toward climate priorities? Another leader navigated that...
