Happy Summer! We're skipping next month’s newsletter as things slow down for the season. You’ll hear from us again at the end of August with some exciting new offerings - we’re relaunching our online events come fall! Since the beginning, our virtual events have been an important part of the organization as a way to build our global community. Over the years, we produced many one-off events, experimenting with a variety of formats. One of those experiments was a two-week summit back in 2021. This crazy idea helped the org reach even more designers and grow the community. We grew fast in those first few years, and it became clear we were missing some much needed infrastructure. In 2023 we paused the majority of our programs in order to step back, re-assess our goals, and create the systems and documentation needed to run the org smoothly. One major milestone was fiscal sponsorship, and we're excited to join Social Good Fund as one of their projects. We're now ready to our focus back on our community and provide even more value to members and followers. So, stay tuned for this next chapter of Climate Designers. We’re excited to share our new offerings with you all in a couple of months. In the meantime, we hope you all have a great summer. ☀️ – Marc O’Brien and Natalie Walsh In this special episode recorded live during San Francisco Climate Week, Marc O’Brien and Katie Patrick dig into why we’re stuck in a doom-heavy narrative—and what it’ll take to design for the future we actually want. From breaking down the “value-action gap” to calling out the over-reliance on financial incentives and education as motivators, Katie challenges us to rewire how we think about change. This is a conversation about systems, behavior, and possibility. About moving beyond facts and fear. About shifting from problem-obsession to solution momentum. Maybe it’s time to rethink everything.

Our theme for this last Chapters Month was Climate Resilience, and Chapters hosted a great selection of events. If you didn’t see our last newsletter about Climate Resilience, we encourage you to give it a read.
Los Angeles joined Audubon Society for The Birdsong Project, Toronto wrote Poetry in Empathetic Conflict, New York City took a Balcones Recycling Tour, Boston had a Resilience focused event (see below), and Milan hosted speakers on Energy Ecosystem transitions.
And happening today the 26th, the Bay Area is hosting a Walking Tour & Meetup and Seattle is hosting Art Therapy in the Park.
We had a bunch come out to our event, Designing Resilience: A Climate Creatives Meetup. It was nice to talk with people in the same boat about everything from making AI more sustainable to finding jobs in this new world. We also did a fun activity where we had people write post-it notes of actions they've made and rate them from what is most sustainable and least sustainable (based off of what the LA Chapter did a few years ago).
– Brett D, Boston Chapter Lead
Pacific Northwest Climate Week is coming up next month on July 16th - 25th. Climate Designers Seattle Chapter leads Alex Crease and Linsey Nancarrow are helping with planning. If you’ll be in the Seattle area, check out the Design & Innovation Track with a number of events hosted by Alex who runs The Sustainable Design Project. Their events are packed with hands-on activities where participants explore, imagine, and create novel climate and sustainability solutions together.
Check some of them out here:
The podcast focuses on the careers and lives of creators tackling climate issues. We plan to interview individuals and have relaxed conversations about who they are, why they’re involved, and where they’re headed. In our first episode we talk about ourselves and our motivations. We’ve already recorded the second episode, and we’re looking forward to sharing it soon!
– Japan Hub Leads Toshi, Asuka, and Miho

📺 Understory Workwear Textiles Made from Eucalyptus Waste
What if you could use invasive plants as a material for protective clothing? Ari Feldman, an MFA Design Student at the California College of the Arts, created Eucortex gaiters: workwear made from the very environment it protects you from. Ari presented this project on June 12-13 at the 10th Annual Biodesign Challenge Summit alongside 50 teams from around the world. - Leslie F.
📚 Skills for Planet Blueprint from Design Council
This recent report from the Design Council highlights their approach to addressing the green skills gap. While their work is focused on the UK, there are lots of great case studies and takeaways for anyone looking to upskill their design work. - Natalie W.
📚 It’s time for radical courage
What a powerful piece! I appreciate any and all takes that go upstream to call out the root causes of what we are dealing with here today. Our climate breakdown is a symptom of something deeper. This piece goes deep. This is worth reading. - Marc O.

Thoughts on Climate Resilience This month we’re trying something a little different with a themed newsletter. Given recent natural disasters in the US and around the world, the topic of climate resiliency has been on our minds. Climate resilience allows us to prepare, plan, absorb, recover, and more successfully adapt to disruptions due to human-caused climate breakdown. The impacts will show up differently in every neighborhood, which means each of us needs to understand specific risks and...
